Approximately 60% of Rabun County is National Forest, and conservancy is a cornerstone of the community. There are countless conservation organizations in the area dedicated to protecting and preserving North Georgia’s sacred environment. Chattooga Conservancy and The Association of Georgia Land Trusts are just two examples.
Conservation in Rabun County
Wildlife conservation is also an important thread throughout the Rabun County community. The Orianne Society is dedicated to conserving reptiles and amphibians. The Georgia Council of Trouts Unlimited, part of a national network of grassroots volunteers, focuses on protecting, restoring and sustaining the state’s trout.
Conservation Is Close To My Heart
Conservation is a cause that is close to my heart and heritage. My great, great uncle Roscoe Nicholson was the first forest ranger in the state of Georgia. He was an important figure in the preservation of Georgia forest land in the 20th century, and was instrumental in early land purchases around the Chattooga River and Chattahoochee National Forest.
